At Southpaws we continue to expand our network across Melbourne and now we are seeking expression of interest from a board-certified Medical Oncologist to lead and grow our Oncology service. The ideal candidate will hold a Board certification with the ACVIM (Oncology), ECVIM (Oncology), RCVS or ANZCVS in Oncology and be eligible for recognition by the Victorian Veterinary Surgeons Board as a Medical Oncology Specialist. Consideration will be given to those who are Board eligible and scheduled to sit their examinations. You must be eligible to practice as a Veterinarian in Victoria.

The Opportunity
 
Through internal growth, an opportunity has arisen for an experienced Medical Oncologist to join our talented team.  This is an exciting career defining role working alongside our team of Surgeons, including Dr. Stewart Ryan, Specialist Surgeon and Founding Fellow ACVS (Surgical Oncology).  You will enhance our existing Surgical Oncology capabilities including use of electro-chemotherapy, ensuring the highest standards of clinical care and best possible client/patient experience.

You will be supported by an established network of referral Oncology clinicians, residents and interns and will be invited to contribute towards Southpaws strong tradition of providing superior training and development programs for the veterinary profession.

·    Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to accurately assess patient needs and develop appropriate treatment plans

·    Participate as a key member of the patient-care team in implementing treatment plans and monitoring patient progress

Responsibilities

·    Order tests — including biopsy, blood, and imaging — to confirm a diagnosis

·    Provide patients with detailed information regarding cancer, their prognosis, and possible interventions or treatment options 

·    Develop appropriate treatment plans, with measurable goals, that provide the highest level of care while conforming to patient preference

·    Maintain quality of life for patients by managing cancer-related pain and the symptoms and side effects of treatment

·    Reassess as disease treatment progresses, and pursue alternative therapies or palliative care when necessary

·    Participate in training sessions and correspondence for study protocols and clinical trials, and ensure that patient confidentiality is always maintained.

Required skills and qualifications

·    Doctor of medicine (MD) or MD/PhD, or equivalent, with training in oncology or hematology/oncology

·    Board certification relevant to country of hire in hematology/oncology, with licensure in good standing

·    Ability to communicate effectively with patients, caregivers, and other medical professionals

·    Motivation to work in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred skills and qualifications

·    Experience in research and/or clinical protocols

·    Ability to interpret clinical, genomic, and efficacy data

Qualifications and Skills

• Minimum 1 year of experience in medical oncology, demonstrating proficiency in patient care and treatment.
• Expert knowledge of oncological procedures including both surgical and non-surgical practices.
• Ability to administer chemotherapy with precision and care, ensuring patient safety and treatment efficacy.
• Proficiency in molecular diagnostics techniques, enabling accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.
• Exceptional interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with patients and healthcare professionals.
• Experience with oncologist duties is essential, particularly in surgical oncology environments.
• Must be skilled in medical oncology, bringing a comprehensive approach to cancer treatment.
• Oncology skills are mandatory to provide advanced patient care in the treatment of cancer (Mandatory skill).

Roles and Responsibilities

• Evaluate patients' health and develop effective treatment plans for those diagnosed with cancer.
• Perform surgical operations to remove tumors, ensuring thorough preoperative and postoperative care.
• Administer chemotherapy and monitor patients for side effects, adjusting treatment plans as necessary.
• Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to develop comprehensive care strategies for oncology patients.
• Conduct regular follow-up consultations to monitor patients' progress and modify treatments.
• Engage in continuous professional development to remain current with advancements in oncology treatment.
• Educate patients and their families about the diagnosis, treatment options, and ongoing care plans.
• Participate in healthcare outreach and awareness programs to promote cancer prevention and early detection.

We are seeking an accomplished Medical Oncologist with over 10 years of experience to join our highly reputed oncology department. The incumbent will be responsible for providing comprehensive cancer care , including advanced diagnostic, therapeutic, and palliative interventions, while ensuring excellence in patient outcomes and upholding the hospitals commitment to compassionate care and clinical innovation.

• Diagnose and manage patients with solid and hematological malignancies using evidence-based oncology protocols .
• Administer and supervise systemic therapies including chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and hormonal therapy .
• Collaborate with surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, radiologists, and palliative care teams for multidisciplinary treatment planning.
• Monitor patient progress, treatment side effects, and provide ongoing clinical support.
• Engage in cancer screening, prevention, and awareness programs to support community outreach initiatives.
• Lead or participate in clinical trials, research projects, and academic teaching within the hospital.
• Provide mentoring and training to junior oncologists, residents, and fellows.
• Ensure compliance with NABH/JCI standards, ethical practices, and hospital protocols .
• Maintain high-quality patient documentation and case records.

• MD/DNB in General Medicine followed by DM/DNB in Medical Oncology from a recognized institution.
• Fellowship in sub-specialties (e.g., Pediatric Oncology, Hemato-Oncology, or Immuno-Oncology) preferred.
• Minimum 10 years of post-specialization experience in a reputed tertiary care/super-specialty hospital.
• Demonstrated expertise in handling complex oncology cases and advanced systemic therapies .
