Job Description

Textile Lab Officer

Temporary (3 years) – Part Time

Are you ready to stitch creativity into our community? This is your chance to shape a space from the ground up, bringing ideas to life and inspiring hands-on learning in a vibrant and collaborative environment.

  • Be the creative spark in a brand-new cultural initiative
  • Enjoy the freedom to experiment, design, and inspire
  • Flexible schedule designed to fit around your life

LET’S EXPLORE THE JOB

We’re looking for a passionate and creative Textile Lab Officer to help shape a brand new textile-focused maker space at Toronto Library, tirrabiyangba, a sister site to the established Fab Lab at Windale Hub, bilyabayi. This is a unique opportunity to walk into a fresh space and make it your own, building a vibrant, inclusive community around textile arts and fabrication.

You’ll be the face of the Textile Lab, welcoming walk-ins, delivering workshops, mentoring users, and collaborating with curators to develop engaging programs. Whether it’s guiding someone through their first sewing project, helping build a community quilt, or introducing new technologies like embroidery machines or vinyl cutters, you’ll be at the heart of it all.

This role is all about community engagement, creativity, and collaboration. You’ll work closely with diverse groups, volunteers, and the broader maker community to foster enthusiasm and participation. You’ll also have the chance to collaborate with the Fab Lab team to create cross-disciplinary programs that blend textiles with digital fabrication.

Read the position statement and learn more about this exciting opportunity.

LET’S HEAR ABOUT YOU

You’re someone who brings energy, creativity and a love for textiles to everything you do. You’re personable, organised and excited to teach and share your knowledge. You might have a background in sewing, quilting, fashion, or textile arts and you’re keen to explore new ways of working and making.

You’re confident using sewing machines and other textile equipment, and ideally, you’ve had some experience delivering training or workshops. You’re flexible in your approach, open to working with different groups and passionate about building a welcoming and inclusive space.

A teaching or training background is a plus and if you’ve worked with digital fabrication tools like embroidery machines, vinyl cutters or even 3D printers, that’s even better. Most importantly, you’re ready to take something new and help build something exciting with creative autonomy and a strong community focus.

LET’S REVEAL THE PERKS

  • Competitive commencing salary from $41.59 per hour plus 12 per cent superannuation
  • Temporary (3 years) part-time: 15 hours per week
  • Long Service leave after 5 years
  • We value your health and wellbeing and offer generous discounted gym memberships through our Corporate Fitness program, connect with colleagues through our social club, be inspired by regular wellbeing initiatives, annual flu vaccinations, and confidential support via our employee assistance (EAP) program
  • Free parking within walking distance of our office building
  • Along with many other perks that come from choosing Lake Mac!
