The objective of the Senior Building Surveyor is to provide assistance to the MBS and DMBS to achieve compliance by carrying out enforcement, ESM audits, assess applications and other duties as required, in order to meet Council’s obligations under the Building Act 1993.
Specifically, the role will carry out a program of audits of existing buildings and undertake enforcement action to bring buildings into compliance. In addition, to assess and process applications for Report and Consent including siting matters, precautions, projections, etc.
You will have:
- A qualification in Building Surveying and minimum registration as a Building Practitioner in the category of Building Inspector or Building Surveyor.
- Demonstrates experience in resolving complex disputes, exercising sound judgement and dealing with difficult customers, with little detailed guidance relying solely on your own expertise.
- Comprehensive knowledge in building legislative procedures.
- Experience in auditing and inspection of either multi-storey or heritage listed buildings.
- Demonstrated experience in successfully leading, motivating and operating in high-quality customer service environment with a strong team focus.
- Experience in administration and enforcement of the Building Act, Building Regulations and relevant Local Laws in a Council.
This position is offered on a permanent full-time basis, with a salary package up to $130,000.

The Building Services team is moving forward on their next phase of being a customer-centric, high performing team, focussed on delivering exceptional outcomes for the organisation. As such they are seeking a likeminded individual with proven management and leadership skills to perform the role of Municipal Building Surveyor.
Responsible for managing a team of approximately 13 staff, you will be responsible for the smooth running of the Building Services Unit including:
- Technical Responsibility: Using a risk-based approach to ensuring safe buildings, construction works and occupancy of buildings within the municipality.
- People Management: Running an engaged and aligned, high performing building team. Responsible for hiring and day to day management as well as the identification of training and development opportunities for the team.
- Process Improvement: Identifying and carrying out ways to make the Unit even more efficient as well as aligning with any new legislation relating to the Building Act and its functions.
- Operational Efficiency: Prepare and manage the unit’s budget, monitor and report on performance while liaising effectively with peers within the organisation as well as external representatives from state government, local community, councillors, and the development sector.
The successful incumbent will be registered with the VBA as an Unlimited Building Surveyor without restrictions and have extensive knowledge of building and related legislation / acts. They will have the ability to prepare written reports / correspondence on complex issues in a concise and structured manner to target the appropriate audience. Above and beyond their technical capability this person will be able to think strategically about how to improve people and processes and be able to train, develop and inspire a team to new heights.
