Functions, Duties, Tasks:

  • Use SAS or other software to develop custom programming code to generate tables, data listings, graphs and derived datasets as specified in the protocol/statistical analysis plan.
  • Ensure that outputs meet quality standards and project requirements.
  • Perform validation programming and work with other Programmers, Biostatisticians, and other project team members to resolve discrepancies or any findings.
  • Keep project team members informed of programming progress and issues requiring their attention.
  • Follow applicable SOPs and relevant regulatory guidelines.
  • Manage scheduling and time constraints across multiple projects at a time, set goals based on priorities from management, and adapt to timeline or priority changes by reorganizing daily workload.
  • Prepare in advance for internal meetings, contribute ideas, and demonstrate respect for opinions of others.
  • Display willingness to work with others and assist with projects and initiatives as necessary to meet the needs of the business.
  • Negotiate and establish accurate time estimates for completion of study programming activities with internal team members and statistical programming management, and complete project programming activities within timeframe allotted.

  • Ensure scientific integrity and animal welfare in all activities.
  • Interact with global statisticians and implement recommendations locally.

    About the Role:

    The Clinical Trials Unit provides support for the conduct of clinical research at Canberra Hospital. The Unit currently has active trials in varying stages ranging from ethics submissions to trial close outs. The number of participants in each trial varies from approximately 1 to 1000 participants. These trials are either Pharmaceutical Sponsored trials, Collaborative or Investigator Led trials that are funded by grants such as the National Health & Medical Research Council.

    The Clinical Trials Unit is establishing an in-house sample processing and coordination function to support the increasing volume and complexity of clinical research at Canberra Hospital. This newly created role will be responsible for coordinating all aspects of trial-related specimen handling, including processing, packaging, storage, transport, and documentation, in accordance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and sponsor requirements. The successful candidate will work closely with clinical trial coordinators, sponsors, couriers, and laboratory partners to ensure efficient and high-quality specimen management. With support of the management team, this position will play a key role in establishing new workflows, documentation, and relationships to support a scalable and sustainable service. Experience with specimen processing techniques (e.g., spinning, aliquoting, freezing), logistics coordination, and a strong understanding of trial protocols and regulatory requirements is essential. While the role does not initially have direct reports, it is expected to contribute to service development and future team expansion.

    The Rural, Regional and Remote Clinical Trials Enabling Program (R3-CTEP) is a decentralised clinical trial initiative enabling patients in rural, regional and remote areas of the ACT and NSW to participate in trials by reducing the need for travel to major centres. Distance is a significant healthcare barrier for 30% of Australians living in rural, regional and remote areas. R3-CTEP is an initiative supported by funding from the Australian Government under the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) which aims to improve access to innovative healthcare. The Southern Cluster includes Canberra Health Services (CHS), Illawarra-Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD), Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD), and Southern NSW Local Health District (SNSWLHD).

    The role of the Southern Cluster Manager is to provide strategic and operational leadership for the Southern Cluster in the R3-CTEP program, ensuring that the cluster achieves its goals of increasing the conduct of, and participation in, clinical trials in rural, regional, and remote areas in southern NSW and the ACT.
