Role Summary:
The Protection & Control Design Engineer will perform engineering activities to design, in control and protection systems within the HV/EHV electricity grid. This role involves ensuring that projects are executed in accordance with company procedures, contract specifications, and schedule commitments while adhering to international and local quality standards. Responsibilities include needs analysis, control & protection system design, examining the site surveys, creation of the technical documentations and taking the necessary responsibilities as a project design team member. The role requires collaboration with internal teams, external vendors, and end customers to ensure seamless integration and functionality of electrical design solutions.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Working knowledge of Transmission & distribution networks (from Low Voltage to Extra High voltage (132kV or upwards) specially in protection & control system designing.
- Develop and design Control & Protection systems for HV/EHV substations and power plants, ensuring reliable operation
- Prepare the technical design documents, including electrical schemes, wiring diagrams, single line diagrams, panel front views, panel layouts, cable schedules, interlocking schemes and technical specifications.
- Analyzing the results which are obtained from the power system simulation software. Review the technical design of the Control & Protection System drawings, detailed specification etc. with the customers for acceptance.
- Utilize simulation tools for protection coordination, such as DIgSILENT, to enhance protection design precision.
- Prepare scheme based on knowledge of protection system technologies and automation system technologies, for facilitating new connections as well as Network Upgrades along with other Design Teams for finalizing the technical specifications covering Functional requirements, Ratings and parameters, Compliance standards, Interface requirements etc.
- Calculate the equipment sizing circuit brakers, capacitors, conductors, cable etc.
- Present the technical design of the primary system drawings, detailed specification etc. with the customers and stakeholders for approval.
- Summarizing the technical results and technical report preparation and working with clients to finalise the Vendor Tender Documentations and technical interactions.
- Possess sufficient knowledge and/or experience to work safely in an HV/EHV substation, adhering to HSE regulations and industry standards such as OSHA or equivalent guidelines to mitigate risks and ensure compliance.
- Possess familiarity with industry standards and codes such as IEC, IEEE, and local regulations. Implement adherence to international standards such as IEC 61850, IEEE standards, and NERC CIP for cybersecurity compliance.
- Ensure all engineering documentation such as basic design documents, system configurations, and standard operating procedures are accurate.
- Provide technical support to site teams during testing and commissioning works to ensure proper functionality of protection & control systems within high & extra high voltage networks.
- Work closely with project managers, secondary design engineers, civil design engineers and other stakeholders to ensure seamless integration of primary systems/equipment.
Requisite work experience and skill set:
- A minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience with specific focus in HV/EHV substations, lines, switchgears, power plants etc.
- Knowledge of Transmission & Distribution UK GRID Code/ Standards
- Prior experience working with utilities in the UK or Europe, providing familiarity with regional regulations and operational practices.
- Has experience of protection equipment such as protection relays, BCU (Bay Control Unit), trip relays, AVR etc.
- Knowledge of IEC61850 protocol for substation control & protection system.
- Familiarity with relevant drawing standards such as IEC61082-1 and IEC60617.
