    Job Description:

As bp transitions to an integrated energy company, we must adapt to a changing world and maintain competitive performance. bp’s customers & products (C&P) business area is setting up a business and technology centre (BTC) in Pune, India. This will support the delivery of an enhanced customer experience and drive innovation by building global capabilities at scale, using technology, and developing deep expertise. The BTC will be a core and connected part of our business, bringing together colleagues who report into their respective part of C&P, working together with other functions across bp. This is an exciting time to join bp and the customers & products BTC!

    Role Overview :

Do you want to help shape the future of data at bp?

We’re hiring three Data Governance Leads to join our growing Central Data Office team within Customers & Products. These are exciting, high-impact roles that sit at the heart of bp’s data transformation — solving complex challenges and embedding governance across our business.

You’ll be part of a high-performing team that’s gaining momentum across bp. If you’re passionate about data governance and want to make a difference, this is your chance to lead from the front.

We’re looking for specialists in the following areas:

Metadata & Data Cataloguing  – ideally with experience in Alation , but other tools are welcome. Data Quality  – ideally with Anomalo , and experience developing generic rules engines is advantageous. Master Data Management (MDM)  – ideally with SAP Master Data Governance  and Semarchy .

    Responsibilities:

    • Act as a strategic leader for your area of specialisation, owning governance frameworks and ensuring they support bp’s business and regulatory needs.

    • Define and implement data standards, policies and controls to ensure governed data is accurate, consistent and trusted across the organisation.

    • Lead the definition and continuous improvement of data governance processes, ensuring alignment with bp’s enterprise data strategy and operational workflows.

    • Identify areas of improvement in data quality, structure and usage — and lead initiatives to resolve them using a data governance framework.

    • Partner with programme and technical teams to shape and deploy scalable data governance solutions, ensuring consistency across markets and systems.

    • Collaborate with business and technical teams to embed governance into data lifecycle processes, including metadata, lineage, and classification.

    • Represent data governance in enterprise-wide forums and contribute to cross-business and cross-domain initiatives.

    • Support the delivery of bp’s data strategy by ensuring governed data is fit for purpose, well-managed, and aligned with strategic goals.

    Job requirements & qualifications:

    • You will have 12–15 years of professional data experience , with a strong foundation in data governance, data management or enterprise data strategy. While we value deep expertise, we recognise some of the tools and platforms we use — such as Alation, Anomalo & Datasphere are relatively new. Therefore, we’re looking for candidates who bring broad experience and adaptability, rather than expecting long tenure with any specific tool.

    • Strong experience in data governance, data management or enterprise data strategy within complex organisations.

    • Deep expertise in one or more of the following areas:

      • Metadata & Data Cataloguing (Alation or similar tools)

      • Data Quality (Anomalo or similar tools, rule engine development)

      • Master Data Management (SAP MDG, Semarchy)

    • Proven ability to lead data initiatives, influence stakeholders and drive change across business and technical teams.

    • Familiarity with data governance frameworks, tools and practices — including metadata management, data quality, and lineage.

    • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to translate governance principles into business value.

    • Experience working in agile or matrix environments and managing delivery partners.

    • Certification or working knowledge of industry frameworks such as DAMA-DMBOK or DCAM is beneficial but not essential.

    You will work with:

    • Business leadership teams across Customers & Products to identify opportunities where improved data governance can unlock strategic value.

    • Other Data Governance Leads and Data Domain Owners to ensure consistency and alignment across domains.

    • Programme leads and business data managers to embed governance into delivery and transformation initiatives.

    • Technical teams responsible for data architecture, platforms and analytics to ensure governed data is integrated and accessible.

    • External partners and contractors supporting data programmes.

    • Governance forums and working groups shaping bp’s enterprise-wide data strategy.
