Overview of the role

Applications are now open for an Environmental Advisor to join the Safety, Health, Environment and Quality team. 

As a generalist role, this is an excellent opportunity to be a part of improving environmental performance by providing scientific advice to all Port Pirie operational areas on matters such as air and water quality, land management and waste. You will also be involved in general environmental management and project initiatives.

Reporting to the Principal Environmental Advisor, this is a residential role, based in Port Pirie, South Australia on a Monday to Friday roster. Relocation assistance will be provided to the successful candidate if required.

Key responsibilities of the role include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide generalist environmental advice to operational areas
  • Collate environmental/scientific data and report accordingly
  • Identify initiatives and projects to drive environmental improvement and performance
  • Contribute to the development of environmental management and improvement systems and practices
  • Support the development and implementation of effective monitoring tools and techniques
  • Carryout inspections, conduct investigation and take appropriate action

Qualifications, Skills & Experiences:

  • 2+ years environmental experience in heavy industry such as chemical/petrochemical, mining, minerals processing, shipping, transport or similar
  • Degree in Environmental Science or Engineering, or related engineering, geology or industrial health/hygiene
  • Qualifications and/or on-the-job experience in air quality is highly advantageous
  • Strong understanding of ISO4001 and regulatory requirements relating to environment
  • Competency in systems/database computer literacy
  • Demonstrated ability to analyse data and provide reports
  • Ability to build relationships and identify initiatives for projects

  • Proven track record in delivering IS ratings for infrastructure projects, particularly in construction or civil engineering sectors
  • Experience in ISCA documentation preparation, submission processes, and stakeholder engagement throughout rating assessments

  • Drive delivery of the OMS Performance Improvement Cycle (PIC) and support leaders on implementation of action plans to achieve and maintain OMS conformance.  
  • Drive consistency by setting global performance standards for OMS SEs, providing mentorship within Castrol as to “what good looks like” and maintaining relevant content in Castrol OMS ONLINE. 
  • Supports capability of roles within Castrol, including the development and delivery of relevant OMS training, interventions and materials. 
  • Identifies and shares standard methodologies and takeaways across Castrol, influencing PUs and functions to ensure consistency.  
  • Use the 5-step interpersonal learning process to mhandleopportunities to learn. 
  • Provides input or approves deviations from the Castrol local operating management system (LOMS). 
  • Handle designated OMS SE risk barriers, self-verification protocols and processes 
  • Develops and maintains specific plans, policies, processes, systems and tools to enable appropriate implementation in Castrol

Education  

University degree (or equivalent work experience), preferably in a technical field. Formal social management or sustainability qualification (e.g. NEBOSH diploma) or graduate degree or equivalent experience desirable  

Skills & Proficiencies  

  • Deep knowledge on health, safety, environmental or sustainability management systems within an international brand marketing business environment, including knowledge of the external competitive environment.  
  • Proven track record to think both operationally and strategically.  
  • Digital tool experience and proficient use of Microsoft applications (e.g. Power BI, Excel, Word, etc.) and ability to navigate different platforms desirable.

    Job Description

    **Responsibilities**
    + Undertake assessments and remediation of contaminated land, groundwater and surface water resources by applying appropriate analysis and evaluation, drawing on relevant guidance, international and national policies
    + Undertake desk-based studies of site investigation data; prepare remedial action plans and monitoring/management plans; other expert services
    + Prepare technical reports including the analysis and interpretation of investigation and monitoring data
    + Work in conjunction with senior staff in specialty domains like geotechnical and planning etc
    + Assist with preparing expressions of interest, pre-qualifications, project proposals/bids, fee estimates and project work programmes and budgets
    + Maintain knowledge of current technical standards, good practice guidance, legislation, codes of practice and New Zealand standards like the National Environmental Standard for Assessing and Managing Contaminants in Soil to Protect Human Health, Regulations 2011 (NESCS)
    + Ensure assignments are completed on schedule or in a timely manner and within budget
    + Work in sync with multidisciplinary, cross-cultural and geographically distributed teams; Integrate technical inputs from project peers to deliver the project outcome
    + Contribute on an on-going basis toward maintaining a safe working environment both for yourself and for those working with you or in your close vicinity; Ensure that confidentiality is respected and professional work ethics are maintained at all times
    + Develop and maintain strong professional relationships with clients and the scientific community generally (including the publishing and/or presentation of papers)
    **Desired Skills**
    + Demonstrated experience of developing interpretive or factual reports suitable for submission to statutory authorities
    + Understanding of international contaminated land guidelines; Familiarity of New Zealand legislation and guidelines like NESCS preferred
    + Experience in scoping and conducting contaminated site investigations preferred
    + Field experience of conducting site walkovers, soil, gas and groundwater sampling including the use of field equipment; Monitoring well installations; Asbestos in soil identification and management preferred
    + Proficient in data management skills; Good analytical skills and attention to detail.
    + Ability to work effectively and competently with people at all levels; within and external to the organisation
    + Client centric, with strong organisational ability to optimise and prioritise conflicting demands in a busy environment, to achieve deadlines and see responsibilities through to completion

    + Familiarity with EQuIS, EnviroInsite, RBCA Toolkit etc.
    + Familiarity with GIS tools like ArcGIS, QGIS etc. preferred
    + Demonstrable expertise in professional report writing in MS Word and presentations using MS Powerpoint etc.
    + Proficiencies in a broad range of data analysis and representation tools such as R, Microsoft Excel, PowerBI etc.
    + Coding and scripting skills would be preferred: VBA, Python, SQL, JavaScript etc.
