How you’ll make an impact:

Conducting pre-employment, fitness-for-work, and return-to-work health assessments to ensure employees can perform their roles safely as well as annual health checks for employees

Monitoring employees exposed to risks such as noise, vibration, chemicals, or other workplace hazards to detect early signs of work-related illness or injury

Advising employers on how to mitigate workplace health risks and comply with relevant health and safety regulations.

Your background:

MBBS with AFIH (Associate Fellow of Industrial Health)

At least 10 - 12 years of relevant experience in industrial hygiene, preferably in manufacturing industry with at least 2 to 3 years of clinical experience.

Knowledge of applicable regulatory industrial hygiene standards, guidelines, and best practices

Strong leadership, communication, and program management skills

Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and influence internal and external stakeholders

**Job Description**
+ Lead the planning, execution, and integration of Human Factors activities across the full system lifecycle, from concept through to operation and maintenance. Establish HF design philosophies and strategies aligned with project and regulatory requirements. Act as technical lead on key rail and infrastructure projects, ensuring alignment with HF integration strategies and applicable standards (e.g. EN 50126, ISO 9241, RIS-7100, RSSB guidance).
+ Experience producing Human Factors Integration Plans, Human Factors Issue Logs and Human Factors Assessment Report and experience of conducting assessments such as Hierarchal Task Analysis. Execute HF design development activities, including design reviews, mock-ups, simulators, and structured user feedback studies.
+ Lead certification planning and develop compliance strategies for HF-related system elements. Provide expert input into RAMS (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, and Safety) assurance activities.
+ Translate regulatory and system requirements into clear, verifiable HF design and usability criteria. Conduct and review task analyses, HMI design assessments, usability testing, cognitive workload studies, and error management strategies.
+ Develop, review, and approve certification-related documentation (e.g., Issue Papers, Equivalent Levels of Safety, Test Plans, Design Reports). Oversee planning and execution of HF-related test campaigns, including fabrication, witnessing, and compliance evidence.
+ Interface with certification bodies and regulatory stakeholders to demonstrate compliance and resolve design queries. Drive human-centred design within multidisciplinary teams, ensuring HF is embedded in technical decisions and design trade-offs.

**Essential Qualifications and Experience**
+ Master's degree (MSc) in Human Factors, Ergonomics, or a closely related discipline
+ A minimum of 10-15 years' professional experience in Human Factors, including at least 5 years in the rail or other regulated, safety-critical environments
+ Significant experience applying Human Factors principles to UK and international rail programmes, with expert understanding of relevant standards (e.g., EN 50126, RIS-7100, RSSB guidance)
+ Proven technical leadership in the delivery of HF activities, including HMI design, task and workload analysis, error management, human-system integration, and user-centred design
+ Strong capability in interpreting and developing engineering specifications and HF compliance documentation
+ UK Rail experience

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Leads the strategy, planning, and execution of human factors engineering activities and validation for product development projects of all sizes.

Advises, reviews, and approves HFE work for projects with limited scope or lower business priority.

Conducts user-centered research including interviews, contextual inquiries, task analyses, and anthropomorphic evaluations for development of user and environment profiles, use specification, use cases, and usability/user interface requirements.

Exercises independent judgment in usability testing methodology, data collection, data analysis, conclusions, and design recommendations at various stages of product development from early prototypes through formal validation testing.

Ensures that product development projects are following HFE process compliant with all Company policies and procedures as well as existing IEC Usability standards, AAMI Human Factors standards and/or FDA Human Factors Guidances.

Analyzes field data and reviews literature and publications to identify existing usability issues with on-market products. 

Works with cross-functional teams to create and maintain use-related risk analyses and user interface requirements.

Actively collaborates in prototype development of user interfaces, including software, graphical user-interface, hardware or disposable components, and labeling and training. 

Supports the development of internal tools for human factors data capture, analysis, and testing.

Contributes to identifying and developing design and development process improvements.

Reinforces customer empathy and human-centered design approach across the organization.

Keeps abreast of regulations and best practices for medical device human factors engineering (e.g. IEC 62366, AAMI HE75, FDA Applying Human Factors and Usability Engineering to Medical Devices).

Responsibilities may include providing work direction to technicians and junior engineers.

Collaborate with other functional groups, technical disciplines, and levels of management including other engineering disciplines such as Systems and Software Systems, UX Designers, Product Technology Leads, Marketing, Regulatory, Project Managers, Global Services, and Global Product Support and Training.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Education

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job may be considered.

Bachelor of Science Degree in Usability/Human Factors Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Systems Engineering or related research-based degree, preferred.

Experience

Minimum 4 years experience.

Experience with Human Factors/Usability in medical devices and familiarity with existing IEC Usability standards, AAMI Human Factors standards and/or FDA Human Factors Guidance, preferred.

Experience with risk management activities for medical devices, specifically those applied by Human Factors (i.e. URA, UFMEA, AFMEA, UEA techniques), preferred.

Requires working knowledge of human factors, design controls, quality, and risk management regulations, standards, and guidances for medical devices.

headspace works from an early intervention and prevention framework with young people and their families who have emerging mental health issues.
