The position
Working at our modern and busy clinic, the General Practitioner will report to our most senior doctor and have all the support services at hand as part of a team of professionals, including support staff. You will work closely with our Aboriginal Health Team, this full-time, ongoing position that provides access to much needed holistic, culturally appropriate care for both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal patients.
About you
Essential
- Registration as a medical practitioner with Medical Board.
- Current Medical Indemnity.
- Must be an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident.
- Must have Full AHPRA Registration as a Medical Practitioner (Specialist Registration).
- Fellowship with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP), College of Rural and Remote Medicine (FACRRM) or Vocational Registration (VR).
- Patient focused.
- Demonstrated understanding and commitment to Aboriginal health, Aboriginal culture, and the philosophy and practice of Aboriginal Community Control.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients including children, partners and families, and explain technical medical procedures competently and in language that is easily understood.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multi-skilled team.
- Demonstrated ability to teach and impart knowledge to other health professionals including Aboriginal Health Workers.
- Demonstrated understanding of current relevant legislation e.g. Medicare.
- Understanding of accreditation processes and the requirements within the Standards for General Practice released and maintained by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners.
- Competence in information technology applications, including Microsoft Office Suite and database programs for General Practitioners.
- Provision of services that are inclusive of Aboriginal Communities and people.
- Willingness to engage in learning about Aboriginal culture, to better establish relationships and improve services.
- Be eligible to apply for a Medicare provider number
- A current full Victorian Driver Licence.
Desirable
- Identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.
- Knowledge of Aboriginal social and cultural history and the impacts of social determinants on health outcomes for Aboriginal clients.
- Knowledge and understanding of national and state government Aboriginal health policies, strategies, and initiatives.

Services include acute and general care, chronic disease, Women’s & Children health, men’s health, alcohol and other drugs, social and emotional wellbeing and client support services.
The role of a General Practitioner at Wurli is to provide evidence based and culturally appropriate primary health care services to clients of our service and to contribute to the development and sustained operation of a multidisciplinary primary health care team. General Practitioners are expected to deliver medical services in accordance with Wurli policies and procedures, guided by CARPA standard treatment manual and applicable legislation and regulations and to ensure standards are met in accordance with the Australian General Practice Accreditation Limited (AGPAL).
Key Requirements of Service Delivery include:-
- Provide evidence based clinical care in a cross cultural setting to clients in collaboration with a team that includes Registered Aboriginal Health Practitioners, Registered Nurses and other allied health professionals.
- Provide education and clinical support to other team members
- Deliver services in a manner that respect and honour clients as central decision makers in their health care
- Complete community, home care , aged care and school educational visits as required
- Maintain professional practice protocols
- Liaise with regional Aboriginal agencies, community health clinics, hospitals, relevant government agencies and other appropriate staff to ensure clients have access to relevant services and programs as required
- Actively encourage client/family/community to engage in practices conducive to optimising health. Participate in committees and working groups to support the integration of acute care.
Key Features of the Role:-
- Based in Katherine, Northern Territory
- Works alongside a dedicated primary healthcare and wellbeing teams. In so doing, demonstrates respect for other allied health professional roles.
- Supervision of training health professionals including but not limited to GP Registrars and Medical Students.
- An ordinary working week of 37.5 hours; Monday to Friday.
Applicants must be able to demonstrate:
- Medical Degree / Vocationally Registered General Practitioner (VRGP)
- Current AHPRA Registration
- Current Criminal History Check
- Working with Children Clearance
- A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in general practice
- Previous experience in working in a cross cultural service environment, particularly in Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander health care
- Ideally have Accreditation as a GP Registrar Supervisor
