Job Description

SUMMARY OF ROLE

The MV Industrial Application Engineer will be responsible for the architecture, design, and development of Medium Voltage (MV) electrical systems for industrial applications such as manufacturing plants, process industries, and utility-scale facilities. The engineer will lead the system-level design and integration of MV motors, drives, transformers, protection schemes, and control systems, ensuring alignment with operational requirements, safety standards, and grid compliance.

This role involves working on MV power distribution and conversion systems that support high-power equipment, including compressors, conveyors, pumps, fans, and other critical industrial loads. The engineer will collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver robust, efficient, and compliant MV solutions tailored to industrial environments.

Key Responsibilities

System Design & Architecture

  • Lead the electrical system design of Medium Voltage (MV) Power Conversion Systems (PCS) for industrial applications, including grid-tied and off-grid systems supporting motors, compressors, conveyors, and other high-power equipment.
  • Define MV system topologies optimised for industrial environments, including AC/DC/DC interconnections, grounding schemes (solid, resistive, or isolated), and transformer configurations (e.g., delta-wye, zigzag) suited for motor-driven systems and process loads.
  • Select and size MV components such as variable frequency drives (VFDs), soft starters, rectifiers, MV transformers, switchgear, and protection devices based on industrial load profiles, motor starting requirements, and grid codes.
  • Design MV distribution networks to support:
  • MV motors for pumps, compressors, fans, and agitators
  • MV drives for conveyors, crushers, rolling mills, and HVAC systems
  • MV control panels for continuous-duty and high-inertia machinery
  • Implement protection and control schemes using ANSI/IEEE standard relays for motor protection (e.g., overload, locked rotor), feeder protection, and transformer protection, ensuring coordination and arc-flash safety.
  • Conduct system studies and simulations using tools like ETAP, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, or PSCAD to validate performance under industrial operating conditions such as motor starting, fault scenarios, and load transitions.
  • Prepare detailed engineering documentation, including single-line diagrams, cable schedules, protection coordination studies, and equipment specifications tailored for industrial MV systems.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, automation, and process engineering teams to ensure seamless integration of MV systems into plant operations and control systems (e.g., SCADA, PLC).
