Job Description
1. Equipment Installation & Assembly
- Interpret and work from engineering drawings, P&IDs, and isometric layouts.
- Assemble and install process equipment such as:
v Centrifugal and positive displacement pumps
v Compressors, gearboxes, blowers
v Valves (gate, globe, check, safety relief, ball, diaphragm)
v Reactors, heat exchangers, condensers
v Piping systems and pipe supports
- Conduct alignment of pumps and motors using dial indicators or laser alignment tools.
- Install gaskets, seals, couplings, flanges, and pipe fittings.
2. Preventive & Predictive Maintenance
- Perform routine mechanical checks as per the PM schedule.
- Clean, lubricate, and adjust moving parts and components.
- Replace worn-out components such as bearings, gaskets, mechanical seals, and belts.
- Assist in vibration analysis and thermographic checks as required by predictive maintenance programs.
- Update logbooks, history cards, and maintenance management systems (CMMS).
3. Breakdown Maintenance & Troubleshooting
- Respond to mechanical failures or breakdowns on urgent basis to minimize downtime.
- Dismantle faulty equipment, identify the root cause, and replace or repair defective parts.
- Use precision measuring instruments like micrometres, vernier callipers, dial gauges to ensure dimensional accuracy.
- Collaborate with production and electrical teams during troubleshooting of cross-functional issues.
4. Fabrication & Welding Support
- Cut, bend, and fabricate metal sheets, pipes, or structural supports using gas cutters, grinders, drill machines, and pipe benders.
- Perform basic arc, MIG, or gas welding (if certified) for plant maintenance or equipment repair.
- Prepare support structures, brackets, or temporary platforms as needed.
5. Piping & Utility System Support
- Assist in the installation and repair of utility lines (steam, compressed air, cooling water, chilled brine, nitrogen).
- Inspect and replace worn gaskets, pipe fittings, or supports to prevent leaks and unsafe operation.
- Perform flushing, hydro testing, and leak detection on pipelines during shutdowns or new installations.
6. Plant Turnaround / Shutdown Assistance
- Participate in plant shutdowns for major overhauls or inspections.
- Follow shutdown checklists, disassembly protocols, and reassembly standards.
- Collaborate with contractors, QA/QC teams, and safety officers during large-scale maintenance activities.
7. Safety, Compliance & Housekeeping
- Follow all plant safety protocols including:
- Permit to Work (PTW) system
- Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO)
- Confined space and height safety procedures
- Report unsafe conditions or equipment malfunctions immediately.
- Maintain good housekeeping in the workshop, mechanical room, and around job sites.
- Properly tag and store tools and spares after use.
8. Documentation & Coordination
- Record daily activities in maintenance logbooks.
- Report spares and consumables requirements proactively to avoid delays.
- Support root cause analysis (RCA) for recurring mechanical problems.
- Attend toolbox talks and contribute to safety and quality initiatives.
Qualifications & Experience:
- ITI or Diploma in Mechanical / Fitter Trade
- 2-3 years of experience in mechanical maintenance, preferably in chemical, petrochemical, or process industries
- Proficiency in pump alignment, valve overhauling, mechanical seal replacement, and pipe fitting
- Basic knowledge of mechanical drawings, material specifications, and tool usage
Desired Skills:
- Hands-on experience with rotating and static equipment
- Knowledge of mechanical seals, gland packing, bearing replacement
- Understanding of ISO/GMP/OSHA/SHE standards in industrial environments
- Ability to work independently and in a team under pressure
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety

ROLE OVERVIEW:
The purpose of the Maintenance Technician (Fitter) Mechanical is to repair, maintain and improve the reliability of the plant and equipment, ensuring production can produce the required products.
DAY TO DAY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Ensures all maintenance tasks are executed using the appropriate safety standards and are compliant with policies, regulations and SOP’s
- Repair and maintain production equipment as efficiently as possible and to the required quality standards.
- Ensure that all work is done according to the highest standards of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). For example, CAPA’s filled out with all information, equipment cleaned prior to returning to production, approved procedures followed, follow up with completing all relevant documentation.
- Attend breakdown’s when requested by Production, or directed by the Supervisor
- Create CMMS orders for every breakdown attended including details of the issues found, actions taken and parts used to resolve in line with the company's SOP’s
- Perform scheduled and condition based maintenance procedures as allocated by the Supervisor, recording details and results
- Complete additional work orders allocated by the Supervisor along with allocated projects, recording details of the outcome and parts used.
- Build, maintain and improve the quality of materials data (Stores/Asset Parts Lists)
- Participate in the 5S program
- Contribute suggestions for improvement
KEY SELECTION CRITERIA:
- Trade Qualified Fitter who must be able to work day shift permanently (6am - 3pm) overtime is available
- At least two years’ experience in Pharmaceutical, Cosmetic, Food, Beverage, Chemical, Packaging or other FMCG industry is desirable along with relevant training and experience in GMP, Quality, OH&S, 5S, Lean Manufacturing
- Experience with fault finding, root cause analysis, machine setup and installations is essential
- Experience in CMMS, SAP, permits, isolations and change management systems highly desirable
- Project installation work highly desirable
- Hazardous area exposure (EEHA) desirable
- Very good mechanical aptitude – able to diagnose root cause within the expected time frames and identify machine deficiencies on the run
- Ability to prioritise and organise work efficiently
- Basic computer literacy – SAP, CMMS experience is helpful
- Basic numeracy – simple arithmetic calculations
- Good command of English – able to read and interpret Standard Operating Procedures and enter data and comments into CMMS orders
