1. To take a proper history of the patient (If he is in a position to give it on his own) or from his relative. Examine the patient. Check any previous records, if available. Charts down all the details in the history sheet.
2. Let the patient or his relative go through all the details and take his signature on the history sheet.
3. Inform the respective consultant about the admission follow his orders.
4. Instruct the nursing staff about the necessary orders to be carried out.If there is a transfer in-patient from the ICU. Read the transfer summary carefully.
5. See the patient and examine thoroughly.
6. Inform the respective consultant and carry out their orders. Inform the nursing staff if any changes or new finding.
7. Attend rounds with the respective consultant and carry out the necessary changes in the order. Enter them in the treatment sheet. Inform the nursing staff on duty about the same.
8. To follow up with all the investigation to be seen and trace their results.
9. Inform the consultant. Note down investigation results in the investigation sheet.
10. To enter pre-operative orders in the treatment sheet. To check whether the consent for the surgery has been taken from the patient. If not inform the respective person. To inform the Anesthetists on duty and instruct him/her about the patient. To carry out all the pre-operative orders.
11. To attend patient complaints. To calm the patient if they are apprehensive. Inform the consultant if needed.

**The following will be the duties and responsibilities of Resident Medical Officers**:
- The Resident Medical Officer reports to the Consultant and plays a key role in building and maintaining relationships between the Director of Nursing, Director of Clinical Services, Hospital Management, Consultants, Medical, Nursing Staff and the Multidisciplinary Team.
- To ensure the highest standards of patient care for all patients attending/admitted.
- To establish and maintain teamwork and co-operation with the multidisciplinary team i.e. Nursing, Physiotherapy, Radiology etc. to ensure maximum benefit from co-ordinated care.
- To assist the Consultant in Charge/ Sr. Consultant to maintain and develop the highest evidence based clinical and professional standards.
- To keep abreast of new developments, skills, technology, and current literature in order to initiate and respond to changes in the work environment, e.g. data analysis, clinical audit, research, etc. And to meet current CME requirements.
- To keep policies and procedures under review, with regular audit, and revise as required in the light of changing service needs.
- The RMO works in co-operation with the Consultants and the Nursing team in all matters relating to patient care.
- To assist the Consultant In Charge in Clinical Duties:
(I) Clinical Assessment of Patients.
(II) All patients requiring admission/readmission and/or as warranted by an unexpected change in their clinical condition.
(III) Patients attending Day Care and Out-Patient areas will be reviewed as appropriate following a discussion with the Head of Department.
(IV) Patient assessment should comprise of:
- Appropriate history and clinical examination.
- Appropriate investigations (e.g. CXR, ECG, Lab work-up).
- Procedural activity (e.g., blood cultures, IV cannulations and infusions, catheterisation).
- Ensure that there are detailed notes in medical records including proper documentation and discharge summaries, where appropriate eg transfers, convalescence, and rehabilitation.
- Liaising with Consultants in charge and Senior Nursing Colleagues
(V) Prescriptions:
Prescribing may be required as warranted by a change in clinical condition, analgesic requirement, or as a courtesy on behalf of the Consultant staff.
(VI) Ensure that comprehensive handover, with full patient rounds, has taken place at the beginning and end of each shift, (morning and night).
(VII) Carry the cardiac arrest phone and respond to all hospital emergencies, for patients, staff and visitors administering emergency care in the absence of Anaesthetics or Consultants, and continue management until such time as the Consultant is available.
(VIII) Participate in compulsory Hospital based training i.e. Fire and Manual handling renewal of ACLS/ PALS when required etc.
(IX) To carry out any other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time and at the discretion of the Consultant in Charge and or Medical Director.
