The role of a Technical Author
A Technical Author leads the documentation efforts of an engineering team, typically focused on a product or family of products. You'll help the team develop documentation that serves the needs of the product's users, embracing the principles of the Diátaxis documentation framework. You will have a broad impact on - and responsibility for - the quality of the user experience with the product, and will contribute towards the long-term success of the project itself.
These are not traditional technical writer roles. As a Technical Author, you will participate in development of product strategy. You will have input into product design and user experience. You will combine technical expertise with leadership in documentation, collaborating with colleagues across the company to establish documentation as a first-class engineering discipline. Even the most junior Technical Authors will have the opportunity to develop and demonstrate technical authority.
As well as your role in an engineering team, you will also be a part of Canonical's documentation practice team, that includes all the company's Technical Authors. Here, you'll be amongst other documentation experts, who collaborate to define documentation excellence and drive the development of documentation practice and theory, across the company and in the open-source software community.
Location: These are fully remote roles, open to candidates across the globe.
The role entails
- Create, maintain and improve software documentation
- Work with engineering team members, to help them make effective documentation contributions
- Influence the development of the product, as an expert user of the product, who has important opinions about its function and design
- Engage with user communities to ensure that our documentation meets their needs
- Encourage and support community engagement in and contribution to documentation
- Help standardise the structure, presentation, style and language of content across products
- Collaborate with documentation peers to advance the state of the art in documentation at Canonical

What we are looking for in you

Description
As a Technical Support Specialist within Nokia's CDO EICS Networks team, you will play a critical role in managing the lifecycle and performance of our network services, including firewalls, DNS, and secure connectivity for our global offices and partners. Working in a dynamic 24x7 environment, you will troubleshoot complex network issues, coordinate with cross-functional teams, and ensure reliable operation of IT network security services.
Responsibilities
- Provide expert technical support for incident, problem, and change management across IT network technologies.
- Analyze and resolve production network issues while coordinating with cross-functional technical teams.
- Administer service requests and execute network changes for escalated or priority incidents.
- Own incident resolution processes, ensuring timely updates and thorough root cause analysis documentation.
- Design, deploy, and manage advanced firewall and SASE solutions to enhance network security.
- Conduct regular security assessments to maintain compliance with industry standards and propose preventive actions.
- Mentor junior team members and provide technical guidance in network security practices.
- Collaborate with external service providers and OEMs for complex issue resolution and remote implementation support.
Required Skills
You have:
- Bachelor's degree in Telecommunications, Information Technology, Computer Science, or equivalent with
- 10+ years of experience in network services and operation management in complex environments
- Strong knowledge of TCP/IP, VRRP, DNS, ARP, STP, and other networking technologies
- Hands-on experience with FortiGate Firewalls and proxy solutions
- Excellent problem-solving skills with a keen attention to detail
- Proficient in standard routing protocols such as OSPF, ISIS, BGP, and MPLS
- Strong communication and teamwork skills with a focus on customer service
- Understanding of ITIL processes and experience in network monitoring tools
It would be nice if you also had:
- Relevant certifications (e.g., Fortinet NSE, CISSP, CISM)
- Experience with Zscaler SASE solutions and support
- Knowledge of scripting and automation tools for network management
- Familiarity with enterprise WAN, LAN, wireless networking, and virtualization technologies
- Ability to gather requirements and document technical processes
- Ability to learn Nokia Router product knowledge and CLI quickly
