Headquartered in San Francisco, USA, our 500+ team members work remotely throughout the world, including India, the Netherlands, Paris, Spain, Australia, and the USA.
Chargebee has raised over $480 million in capital and is funded by Accel, Tiger Global, Insight Partners, Steadview Capital, and Sapphire Ventures. And we’re on a mission to push the boundaries of subscription revenue operations. Not just ours, but every customer and prospective business on a recurring revenue model.
Our team builds high-quality and innovative software to enable our customers to grow their revenues powered by the state-of-the-art subscription management platform.
Overview of the Role
We are looking for a Technical Lead – Backend Engineering who thrives in fast-paced environments and believes in getting things done. You will drive initiatives that scale our core systems, balance existing business logic with new innovations, and ensure high reliability and performance across mission-critical components.
This role requires taking ownership of complex problems, collaborating effectively with peers, and comfortably engaging in both technical and customer-facing discussions. If you're ready to solve challenges at scale and directly impact the revenue engines of our partners, this is the opportunity for you.
What You'll Work On
Execute with precision: Own technical execution for backend and frontend modules and lead delivery across the team.
Scale smartly: Enhance and evolve existing backend systems with scalable architecture patterns and thoughtful refactoring—not rewrites for the sake of it.
Drive backend excellence: Architect high-performance services using Java and Spring Boot, built for scale and uptime.
Enable observability: Work closely with DevOps to ensure production readiness with robust monitoring and alerting practices on AWS.
Collaborate cross-functionally: Partner with technical peers, product managers, and occasionally with customer-facing teams to ensure alignment of business and tech priorities.
Mentor and lead: Grow backend engineering capabilities by providing clear guidance, thoughtful code reviews, and proactive problem-solving.
What We’re Looking For
Technical Expertise
7–10 years of backend experience, with recent hands-on development in Java and Spring Boot.
Proven experience building and scaling systems to handle high throughput, low latency, and event-driven architecture.
Solid understanding of AWS infrastructure components: EC2, S3, RDS, SQS, VPC, and more.
Familiarity with DevOps best practices, CI/CD pipelines, and performance tuning.
Leadership & Execution
Ability to own end-to-end delivery of backend and frontend features with high accountability.
Pragmatic decision-maker who focuses on value and execution over over-engineering.
Experience leading and mentoring engineers, conducting design reviews, and managing technical debt effectively.
Collaboration & Communication
Strong communication skills to influence technical decisions and align with business objectives.
Comfortable in customer-facing discussions, when needed, to represent technical perspectives.
Proven ability to collaborate with peers and cross-functional teams in remote/hybrid setups.
Bonus Points
Prior experience in subscription billing, e-commerce, or high-scale fintech systems.
Exposure to high-scale event-driven systems
Familiarity with observability tools like Prometheus, Grafana, or DataDog.
Why Join Chargebee’s Engineering Team?
Build features for a platform that processes billions of dollars in revenue annually.
Work on real challenges of scale, resiliency, and complexity, with ownership from day one.
Thrive in a hybrid work environment with flexibility and autonomy.
Recharge with an uncapped leave policy, because sustainable pace matters.
Benefits
Want to know what it means to work for a company that genuinely cares about you? Check out just a few of the benefits we give our employees:
We are Globally Local
With a diverse team across four continents, and customers in over 60 countries, you get to work closely with a global perspective right from your own neighborhood.
